Troost-Ekong Vows to Lead Super Eagles to 2026 World Cup Qualification

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has expressed his determination to help Nigeria secure a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, starting with Thursday’s crucial play-off clash against Gabon in Rabat, Morocco.

His comments come amid reports that the Super Eagles players and technical staff are currently boycotting training sessions over unpaid allowances and bonuses.

Despite the off-field issues, Troost-Ekong said the team remains focused on their qualification mission and fully understands the significance of the upcoming matches.

“I did tell them what my experience was. And I am very much hungry for another time at the world stage,”
the defender said in response to a post by Victor Ademola.

The former Watford man revealed that he often shares his World Cup experience with younger teammates to motivate them.

“We understand the gravity of these games, and I think even for the young players,” he added.

Troost-Ekong, who captained Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, noted that every member of the squad is eager to make a name for themselves on the global stage.

“Nothing has changed from the games that we played before March. We still have to win these games,”
he said confidently.

Nigeria will qualify for the final play-off round if they defeat Gabon on Thursday. They will then face the winner between Cameroon and DR Congo for a chance to advance to the inter-confederation play-offs that will determine who books a ticket to the 2026 World Cup in North America.
