Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is reportedly weighing the option of retiring from international football following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to respected journalist MikeThePundit, the 32-year-old defender may also skip the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this December, raising concerns about his future with the national team.
In a post on X, Mike revealed that Troost-Ekong addressed his teammates in the dressing room after Sunday’s painful defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo, telling them he might not return to the squad.
“Troost Ekong considering retirement from the Super Eagles. The captain told the players after the DR Congo game, ‘I will watch you as a fan at the AFCON,’’’ Mike reported.
Troost-Ekong, who has been a central figure in the team for years, has seen his role diminish recently. The Al-Kholood defender has not made the starting XI in the Super Eagles’ last three matches, further fueling speculation about his international future.
If confirmed, his departure would mark the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s most loyal and influential leaders.
