Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has spoken out after the club began disciplinary proceedings that could potentially lead to the termination of his contract.
Taking to Instagram on Friday, the 33-year-old German addressed recent speculation surrounding his situation, writing:
“In recent weeks, many things have been said about me – some of them entirely unfounded. Therefore, I feel it is necessary to express my version of events respectfully, yet clearly.”
The dispute reportedly centres on Ter Stegen’s fitness following back surgery at the end of July. Local media claimed he initially refused to release his medical records, a move that prevented the club from having him classified by La Liga as a long-term injury a status that would allow them to reduce his wages on their official salary bill.
Barcelona, struggling to meet La Liga’s financial fair play requirements ahead of the new season, stripped Ter Stegen of the captaincy on Thursday, just two days after launching formal action.
In his statement, Ter Stegen insisted he is “fully willing to collaborate” and authorise the release of medical information, but stressed the decision to undergo surgery was agreed upon with the club and made solely to protect his health and career.
“All of the club’s signings and contract renewals were completed prior to my surgery,” he wrote. “The surgery was fully approved by the club, with the intention of returning to the pitch as soon as possible to help win trophies.”
He also rejected any suggestion that his injury should affect the registration of new players, adding:
“My commitment to these colours remains absolute.”
Ter Stegen’s starting spot is now under pressure from summer signing Joan Garcia, 24, and veteran Wojciech Szczesny, 35, who impressed in last season’s title-winning campaign and earned a contract extension.
Should Barcelona press ahead with the disciplinary process, the last remaining member of Luis Enrique’s 2015 Champions League-winning side could face severe sanctions under La Liga rules, including the possible termination of his deal.
