Rivers United Collapse Late as RS Berkane Snatch Dramatic 2-1 Win in Port Harcourt

Rivers United were left stunned on Sunday after conceding two goals deep into stoppage time to fall 2–1 to Morocco’s RS Berkane in their CAF Champions League Matchday 2 encounter — a match they had led and looked set to win.

Rivers United appeared to be in control of the game, when a defensive blunder by Berkane’s Mamadou Lamine Camara gifted them the opener in the 38th minute.

The Senegalese defender mistakenly turned the ball into his own net, and the Nigerian side held firmly to their slim lead throughout regulation time.

But the drama unfolded in stoppage time, with seven minutes added, Rivers United looked content to slow down the tempo and protect their advantage. However, the strategy backfired when an additional three minutes were played, and those extra moments proved costly.

In the seventh minute of added time, Youness El Kaabi capitalised on a loose ball from a free-kick, drilling in the equaliser that stunned the home crowd. Rivers United barely had time to regroup before disaster struck again.

Just moments later, Mounir Chouiar completed the comeback for Berkane, reacting quickest after an initial effort struck the post to fire home the winner.

The late collapse dealt a heavy blow to Rivers United’s Champions League campaign, turning what should have been three points into a painful home defeat.
