Rivers Angels secured their 10th President Federation Cup crown on Saturday in dramatic fashion, overcoming Nasarawa Amazons 4-2 on penalties after a spirited comeback at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos.
The Port Harcourt-based side, one of the most dominant teams in Nigerian women’s football history, found themselves in early trouble, trailing by two goals at half-time. Nasarawa Amazons took the lead just seven minutes in through Rukayat Shobowale, who capitalised on a defensive mix-up. Shobowale struck again ten minutes later, handing the Lafia-based team a commanding 2-0 advantage heading into the break.
Despite the early setback, Rivers Angels remained composed and gradually took control of the game in the second half. Their pressure paid off in the 57th minute when Taiwo Ajibade reduced the deficit with a clinical finish. Just five minutes later, former Flamingos midfielder Taiwo Afolabi lifted a delightful lob over the goalkeeper to level the scores at 2-2.
The tie eventually went to penalties, where Rivers Angels displayed composure and experience. Nasarawa Amazons missed their opening spot-kick through Esther Adesoji, setting the tone for the shootout. Rivers Angels converted three consecutive penalties before goalkeeper Anderline Mgbechi made a crucial save to deny Ayatsea Hembafan. Mgbechi then stepped up to take the decisive final kick, calmly slotting it home to seal a 4-2 victory and complete a remarkable comeback.
This triumph adds to Rivers Angels’ rich legacy, with previous President Federation Cup titles won in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2024.
With the win, Rivers Angels reaffirmed their status as perennial champions in Nigerian women’s football, combining grit, experience, and determination to lift the coveted trophy once again.
