PSG through to semi-finals despite Aston Villa late resurgence

Aston Villa’s Rashford battles for the ball with PSG’s Neves

Aston Villa’s 3-2 victory over PSG was not enough to do the job of securing progression, as they lost 4–5 on aggregate.

PSG took an early lead through Achraf Hakimi as early as the 11th minute, before Nuno Mendes doubled the advantage in the 28th minute following an assist on the plate from Ousmane Dembélé.

Villa responded in the 34th minute as Youri Tielemans pulled one back with an assist from John McGinn though via a deflection.

Aston Villa captain, John McGinn, however, was booked eight minutes later as tempers threatened to rise up in the high-stakes encounter.

Villa continued their comeback after the break, with McGinn levelling the score at 2–2 in the 55th minute from a Pau Torres assist.

Then just three minutes later, Ezri Konsa scored the third goal for Villa, assisted by Marcus Rashford, putting the home side ahead on the night.

Despite the spirited fightback and 3–2 win at full time, Unai Emery’s men were eliminated due to the 4–5 aggregate scoreline in favour of the French champions-elect.

PSG would face the winners of the tie between Arsenal and Real Madrid, with the return leg slated for Wednesday (tomorrow) night at the Santiago Bernabau stadium.
