PSG Edge Tottenham on Penalties to Win First-Ever UEFA Super Cup

European champions Paris Saint-Germain kicked off the new season in style, clinching their first-ever UEFA Super Cup with a dramatic 4-3 penalty shoot-out victory over Tottenham Hotspur after a late comeback forced a 2-2 draw in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday.

Tottenham, playing their first competitive match under new manager Thomas Frank, looked on course for glory after Micky van de Ven’s 39th-minute opener and Cristian Romero’s strike early in the second half put them 2-0 ahead.

However, PSG’s substitutes turned the tide in the closing stages. Lee Kang-in halved the deficit in the 85th minute, before Goncalo Ramos headed home the equaliser four minutes into stoppage time to send the game to penalties.

The shoot-out began poorly for PSG as Vitinha missed their first attempt, but new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier denied Van de Ven, and Mathys Tel fired wide for Spurs.

Ramos, Ousmane Dembélé, and Lee all converted for PSG, before Nuno Mendes calmly slotted the decisive spot-kick. Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro scored for Spurs in vain.

The victory marks PSG’s fifth trophy of 2025 and a historic first Super Cup triumph for any French club. It also provides a perfect lift for Luis Enrique’s squad, who only recently concluded their pre-season after losing the FIFA Club World Cup final to Chelsea a month ago.

PSG open their Ligue 1 campaign away to Nantes on Sunday, while Tottenham turn their attention to the Premier League opener at home to Burnley on Saturday.
