Phoenix Mercury waive D’Tigress Star Murjanatu Musa to make room for Bonner

D’Tigress centre Murjanatu Musa has been waived by WNBA side Phoenix Mercury, just months after joining the Arizona-based franchise, in a roster move aimed at accommodating veteran forward DeWanna Bonner.

The 25-year-old Nigerian international, who joined Phoenix from French Ligue Féminine side Tarbes Gespe Bigorre earlier this year, featured sparingly under head coach Nate Tibbetts, making 12 appearances in her rookie season.

Musa made her debut in the Mercury’s 89-86 win over the Los Angeles Sparks on May 22.

Over the course of the 2025 campaign, she averaged 3.3 points and 2.6 rebounds per game, with an efficient 45.7% shooting from the field.

However, the multiple AfroBasket champion missed the team’s last three games due to a right ankle injury.

Although she was expected to return in Phoenix’s blowout win over the Dallas Wings on Monday, she did not feature, fueling speculation about her status with the team.

Those rumours were confirmed when the WNBA’s official transactions page listed Musa among the players waived by the Mercury.

The decision comes as Phoenix reached the league’s 12-player roster limit. With six players on unprotected contracts, the franchise opted to release Musa to make room for Bonner, who rejoined the team.

Despite the setback, Musa’s brief but promising WNBA stint — highlighted by her defensive presence and passing vision — could open the door for another opportunity with a different franchise.
