Edo State has ushered in a new chapter in its athletics journey with the inauguration of Mr. Onome Obruthe as Chairman of the State Athletics Association.
The inauguration ceremony, which also saw the swearing-in of other executive members, was presided over by the Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele.
Speaking at the event, Enabulele described Obruthe’s appointment as both “strategic and timely,” signaling a renewed drive for excellence in track and field within the state.
“Today marks the beginning of a new era for athletics in Edo State,” Enabulele declared in a statement released by his Media Officer, Edoko Wilson Edoko.
“We are determined to restore Edo to its rightful place as a powerhouse in Nigerian athletics. Our eyes are firmly set on Enugu 2026 and beyond.”
The Sports Commission chairman charged the new athletics boss to bring innovation and energy to the role, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and financial commitment.
“Mr. Obruthe, you are stepping into this role not just as a leader, but as a key stakeholder and sponsor.
Seek strategic partnerships, introduce fresh ideas, and engage every stakeholder. Be assured that the Commission stands solidly behind you,” he added.
Enabulele also stressed the need for accountability, revealing that performance would be tracked using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). “There will be no room for mediocrity.
Results will guide our steps going forward,” he said.
In his acceptance speech, Obruthe expressed gratitude to the state government for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to deliver transformative leadership.“I am truly honoured by this opportunity to serve.
I’m committed to repositioning athletics in Edo and creating a system where talent is nurtured and celebrated.
A new era of discipline, growth, and results begins now,” he stated.
Obruthe outlined his core priorities as talent discovery, enhanced training programs, improved welfare for athletes and coaches, and attracting meaningful sponsorships to elevate Edo athletics.
As Edo State reaffirms its commitment to sports development, stakeholders say the appointment of Obruthe signals a strong intent to strengthen grassroots sports, build capacity, and cement Edo’s status as the ‘Home of Champions’.
