Nwabali Confident Super Eagles Can Win 2025 AFCON in Morocco

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali says he is confident that Nigeria can go all the way to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), adding that the team is fully aware of the high expectations from fans across the country.

The 2025 AFCON will take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

Nwabali, who rose to prominence as one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, believes the lessons learned from that campaign — where the Super Eagles finished as runners-up — will be crucial in their quest for redemption.

Speaking on SuperSport TV, the Chippa United goalkeeper said: “AFCON is one of the biggest tournaments in the world, not just in Africa. As a big nation, we are always expected to win, not just to participate.”

Reflecting on the 2023 final defeat to Ivory Coast, which Nigeria lost 2–1, Nwabali expressed confidence that the experience has made the team stronger and more determined.

“Playing the final last year, I feel this year we are going to win it,” he added.

Nigeria last lifted the AFCON trophy in 2013 under the late coach Stephen Keshi, adding to their previous triumphs in 1980 and 1994.

Nwabali’s impressive performances in Ivory Coast established him as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper, earning plaudits from fans and pundits alike. However, he has faced criticism in recent months for occasional errors and time-wasting antics that drew yellow cards during the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifying series.

Before the AFCON, Nwabali and his teammates will first focus on the African playoffs for the 2026 World Cup, set for next week in Morocco.

With head coach Eric Chelle expected to name his squad soon, Nwabali could face competition from Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who is making his return to the national team setup.

As Nigeria prepares for both tournaments, Nwabali remains confident that the Super Eagles have what it takes to reclaim their place among Africa’s elite and lift the AFCON trophy once again.
