Nigeria’s D’Tigress have made history by becoming the first team to win five consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles following a 78–64 victory over Mali in the final on Sunday, August 3, 2025.
The win cements Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s basketball and extends their incredible unbeaten run in the tournament to 29 games—a streak that began in 2015.
It also comes just days after the Super Falcons clinched the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title, making it a historic double for Nigerian women’s sports.
Mali started strongly, winning the first quarter 26–21. But Nigeria responded in the second quarter, leveling the score at 41–41 by halftime.
The momentum swung further in Nigeria’s favour after the break as they edged the third quarter 20–15 and sealed the game with a dominant 17–8 run in the final quarter.
Amy Okonkwo, Nigeria’s top scorer in the tournament with an average of 12.8 points per game, played a key role once again.

Ezinne Kalu, the 2019 MVP, also delivered when it mattered, disrupting Mali’s offence with crucial steals and timely baskets.
On Mali’s side, Djeneba N’Diaye and Sika Koné stood out. Koné, in particular, proved to be a force near the basket with 10.5 rebounds per game and two double-doubles in four matches.
To reach the final, Nigeria had to dig deep to overcome fierce rivals Senegal in the semifinals, winning 75–68 in what was arguably their toughest match of the tournament.
That win marked their seventh straight victory over Senegal since 2011.
With the game tied late in the fourth quarter, Ezinne Kalu stole the ball and scored a fast-break layup to give Nigeria the lead, before Promise Amukamara and Victoria Macaulay closed out the contest.
Sunday’s victory adds a sixth AfroBasket title to Nigeria’s trophy cabinet, and five of those have now come consecutively—2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and now 2025.
The team’s consistent dominance has firmly established D’Tigress as the queens of African basketball.
