Nigeria has officially been awarded the hosting rights for the 2nd African Schools Games, set to take place in 2027, following a successful bid announced on Tuesday in Algiers.
The country emerged victorious in a competitive bidding process, beating out strong contenders South Africa and Kenya.
Reacting to the announcement, Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, expressed pride and optimism over Nigeria’s selection.
“This is a huge win for Nigeria and for the future of sports development on the continent. Our successful bid is a testament to the unhinged commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to sports excellence,” Olopade said.
“It is also a reflection of the Renewed Hope mandate. Nigeria is fast returning to glory as the epicenter of sports excellence in Africa, while simultaneously growing our sports economy and enhancing our international image as a prime destination for global sporting events. In 2027, Nigeria will deliver an unforgettable experience for young athletes from across the continent.”
Nigeria’s strong recent record in hosting major sporting events—including the National Sports Festival and the 3rd CAA Africa U18/U20 Athletics Championships, played a key role in swaying the decision in its favour. These competitions were praised for their high-level organization, facilities, and athlete experience.
Hon. Olopade also extended appreciation to the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) for entrusting Nigeria with the responsibility and assured that preparations would begin immediately to ensure a world-class event.
The delegation behind Nigeria’s successful bid included Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC, and Habu Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC).
The 2027 African Schools Games are expected to attract the continent’s most talented young athletes, further cementing Nigeria’s growing reputation as a premier host for international sports competitions.
