Liverpool Retire Jota’s Iconic Number 20 in Emotional Tribute

Liverpool Football Club has officially retired the number 20 shirt in honour of Diogo Jota, following the tragic death of the Portuguese forward and his brother, André.

The announcement was made on Friday, with the club revealing that the heartfelt decision was reached in full agreement with Jota’s wife, Rute, and his family.

“Diogo wore the number 20 with pride and distinction, contributing immensely to our triumphs.

That number now belongs to him forever,” the club said in a moving tribute.

This marks the first time in Liverpool’s storied history that a shirt number is being permanently retired — a gesture the club describes as a “unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person.”

The number 20 will no longer be worn at any level of the club, including the women’s team and the academy.

FSG’s CEO of Football, Michael Edwards, highlighted the importance of fan sentiment in the decision. “Our supporters made it clear how much Diogo meant to them. We felt the same.

It was crucial that Rute and his family were fully involved, and we ensured they were the first to be informed.”He added, “By retiring his number, we make it eternal. Diogo will never be forgotten.”

Jota, who arrived at Anfield in 2020, quickly became a beloved figure — known not just for his goals, but for the heart and dedication he brought to the pitch.

“Diogo joined us in 2020, he won us number 20, and he wore it with honour, distinction and affection,” Edwards said.

Club owners Billy Hogan, John Henry, Tom Werner, and Mike Gordon also shared a joint statement, underscoring the rarity and depth of the tribute.

“The fact that in our club’s long and rich history, this honour has never been given before shows how deeply Diogo touched everyone at Liverpool. His legacy will forever be tied to the number 20.”

They extended their sympathies to Jota’s wife and children. “Our love goes to Rute, their three beautiful children, and the entire family as they navigate this unimaginable loss.”

Beyond his on-field brilliance, the club emphasised Jota’s impact off the pitch — describing the lasting bonds he formed with teammates, staff, and fans alike.“Diogo Jota. Our lad from Portugal.

Forever our number 20,” the club concluded.
