Germany attacking midfielder, Florian Wirtz is set to seal his switch to Liverpool after an agreement of £116 million has been reached with Bayer Leverkusen.
A £100 million guarantee and a further £16 million in add-ons are included in the fee for the 22-year-old.
Only if the Reds maintain a high level of success—which would set a British record—will those bonus payments become payable.
Chelsea’s 2023 £107 million acquisition of Argentina player Enzo Fernandez from Benfica still stands as the British record for an initial cost.
Moises Caicedo, a midfield player for Brighton, was also acquired by Chelsea for an initial £100 million, with the possibility of an increase to £115 million.
Nonetheless, the transfer will cost Liverpool a club record.
They paid £75 million to get center-back Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in 2018, and they acquired Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez from Benfica in a deal worth an initial £64 million with potential add-ons of up to £85 million.
Wirtz was linked to both Bayern Munich and Manchester City, however the latter cooled their interest due to the high cost of the transfer.
With Liverpool negotiating a deal that is less than Leverkusen’s appraisal of roughly £126 million, Wirtz is thought to have made it clear that a transfer to Anfield was his preferred option.
