The Co-ordinator of the Lagos Women Run, who also doubles as the President of the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation, Tayo Popoola, has said that this year’s All-Women 10km race will go beyond athletics to foster community connection and empower women through skills acquisition and development.

The 10th edition of the race, themed “One Run, A Thousand Opportunities,” is scheduled for November 8, starting at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) and finishing at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Arena, Onikan.

According to Popoola, the milestone edition will celebrate not only the remarkable journey of the initiative and the vibrant spirit of Lagos but also the thousands of women who have participated since its inception.

She explained that this year’s event will focus on women’s empowerment, recognizing their resilience and dedication while ensuring the sustainability of the program by providing participants with life-changing opportunities.

“The Lagos Women Run has achieved remarkable success in making women happy and uncovering talents,” Popoola said. “It has served as a platform for participants to train for bigger road races, fostering a strong sense of community that allows women of all ages to connect, network, and celebrate themselves.”

She noted that the event’s non-discriminatory nature makes it accessible to all, regardless of social status, while promoting the overall well-being of women.

“The Run encourages participants to step out of their homes, accomplish personal fitness goals, and break free from isolation,” she added. “It helps women discover themselves, overcome depression, and become better versions of themselves.”

Popoola highlighted that through the Lagos Women Run, women from different backgrounds have been empowered to build confidence, acquire new skills, and take charge of their lives.

The event, she said, has become a catalyst for personal growth and transformation, helping many overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.

She also commended the Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Sports Commission, for its continuous partnership and support in ensuring the success and sustainability of the race.

“We are proud to be part of this journey, empowering women to take control of their lives and become agents of change in their communities,” Popoola stated. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Lagos State Government and other stakeholders to make a lasting impact on the lives of women in Lagos.”

Ahead of the race, the Lagos Women Run Empowerment Program will hold from November 3 to 6, featuring a four-day series of workshops, training sessions, and activities designed to equip women with relevant skills, knowledge, and support needed to succeed in various aspects of life.
