Lagos Kicks Off ‘Catch-Them-Young’ Multi-Sports Trials Ahead of 2025 National Youth Games

The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has launched its “Catch-Them-Young” multi-sports trials, a major step in its preparations for the 2025 National Youth Games (NYG) scheduled to hold in Asaba, Delta State.

The initiative, designed as a grassroots talent identification and development programme, aims to scout, nurture, and groom young athletes who will not only represent Lagos at the upcoming NYG but also form a pipeline of elite competitors capable of representing the state and Nigeria on global sporting stages.

The trials, which began several weeks ago at various sports facilities across the state, cover a broad spectrum of disciplines including athletics, swimming, gymnastics, deaf sports, boxing, weightlifting, table tennis, badminton, basketball, football, chess, Ayo, and more.

Targeting boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14, the programme is attracting participation from all corners of the state.

Speaking during the track and field session held today, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Lekan Fatodu, highlighted the strategic importance of early talent discovery in building a sustainable sports development ecosystem.

“The ‘Catch-Them-Young’ programme reflects our unwavering commitment to discovering and nurturing raw talent at the grassroots,” said Fatodu. “We believe every child in Lagos State holds the potential to become a world champion. Through these extensive trials, we’re creating clear and structured pathways for young athletes to turn their dreams into reality.”

He added that the initiative goes beyond short-term goals, aiming to lay the foundation for a long-lasting legacy of sports excellence in Lagos State.

Fatodu also revealed that the Commission is in talks with international sports development partners to provide further training and exposure for standout talents emerging from the programme.

As part of the long-term vision, the Commission has planned intensive training camps and will strictly enforce age eligibility standards to maintain the integrity of the programme.

Focus will be placed on sports where Lagos traditionally excels, while also developing potential in new areas.

The “Catch-Them-Young” trials underscore Lagos State’s proactive approach to youth sports development and its broader commitment to producing the next generation of sporting champions.
