Joao Neves Shines as PSG Crush Inter Miami to Reach Club World Cup Quarter-Finals

Joao Neves scored twice as Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Inter Miami 5-0 to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup.

The reigning European champions were dominant from the first whistle in Atlanta, comfortably dispatching the MLS side, who currently sit sixth in the Eastern Conference.

Neves opened the scoring in the sixth minute, heading home from close range after meeting Vitinha’s well-delivered free-kick.

The 20-year-old Portuguese midfielder added his second in the 39th minute, calmly finishing off a flowing move involving Bradley Barcola and Fabian Ruiz.

The pressure didn’t let up as PSG doubled their advantage before the break. Inter Miami defender Tomas Aviles inadvertently turned a Desire Doue cross into his own net, and Achraf Hakimi added a fourth in first-half stoppage time, hammering home after his initial effort rebounded off the bar.

Luis Enrique’s side eased off in the second half, rotating key players with an eye on Saturday’s clash against Bayern Munich. Ousmane Dembélé, recently recovered from injury, made a second-half return, giving PSG a further boost ahead of their quarter-final test.

Despite the lopsided scoreline, all eyes were on Lionel Messi, who may have played his final game on a global stage.

The 38-year-old Argentine showed glimpses of his brilliance, recording four attempts, two of which were on target, but couldn’t break down his former club.

While PSG’s collective dominance was evident, Neves stood out as the star of the night.

Known more for his midfield presence than goals, the youngster doubled his tally for 2025 with his first club goals since March.

Already a French league and cup, Champions League, and Nations League winner this year, Neves could be on course for an extraordinary trophy-laden season.

Paris Saint-Germain will face Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals on Saturday, July 5, at 17:00 BST in Atlanta.

Bayern booked their place with a 4-2 win over Flamengo.

Inter Miami, meanwhile, will return to MLS action, traveling to Montreal on Sunday, July 6 (00:30 BST).

PSG’s five-goal haul marks the 15th time in 2025 that they have scored four or more goals in a single match, a testament to their offensive firepower and dominance on the world stage.
