Chelle Confident as Nigeria Prepare for CHAN Showdown Against Senegal

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle has expressed optimism ahead of their high-profile Group D opener against Senegal at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Zanzibar City, assuring fans that the Super Eagles B are fully primed for the challenge.

Speaking at Monday’s pre-match press conference, Chelle acknowledged the magnitude of the clash, calling it a battle between two of Africa’s footballing powerhouses.

“I’m not sure if it qualifies as a derby, but what I do know is that this is a meeting between two giants of African football—Senegal and Nigeria,” Chelle said. “There’s a rich history between both nations, with generations of great players produced on either side. It promises to be a fantastic contest.”

Defending champions Senegal will kick off their title defence against a Nigerian side returning to the CHAN for the first time since 2018. Chelle, who oversaw a rigorous four-week training camp ahead of the tournament, said his team is well-prepared.

“Our preparation has been excellent. We’re ready to play this first game and implement everything we’ve worked on over the past month,” he stated.

Tuesday’s clash at the Amaan Stadium will mark the first-ever CHAN meeting between Nigeria and Senegal.

The Teranga Lions boast an impressive record at the tournament, having never lost to a West African side in open play and currently riding a 10-match unbeaten streak in regulation time.

However, Nigeria’s Super Eagles B are no pushovers. Known for their attacking flair, they have netted 25 goals in 15 CHAN matches and have a history of making deep runs in the competition.

They finished third in 2014 and were runners-up in 2018.

The match also holds historical significance for Nigeria, who are facing a reigning CHAN champion for the first time since their heavy 4–0 defeat to Morocco in the 2018 final.

A positive result against Senegal could serve as a major confidence booster—and possibly hint at a power shift in West African football.

Senegal, on the other hand, are eyeing an 11th straight CHAN match without defeat in regulation time as they seek to maintain their reputation for defensive solidity and tournament consistency.
