CAS Upholds UEFA Ruling, Demotes Crystal Palace to Conference League, Hands Europa Spot to Forest

Crystal Palace have lost their appeal to remain in the Europa League after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld UEFA’s decision to demote the club over breaches of multi-club ownership rules.

In its ruling on Monday, CAS confirmed Palace will play in the UEFA Conference League this season, with their Europa League spot going to Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest.

The case centred on American businessman John Textor, founder of Eagle Football Holdings, who CAS determined “had shares in CPFC and OL and was a Board member with decisive influence over both clubs at the time of UEFA’s assessment date.” Olympique Lyonnais (OL) have also secured a Europa League berth.

Palace, who qualified for Europe by winning the FA Cup in May and added the Community Shield on Sunday, had argued that Forest or Lyon should instead be excluded.

However, CAS ruled that UEFA’s regulations “do not provide flexibility to clubs that are non-compliant on the assessment date.”

The expedited appeal process took just two and a half weeks, with an in-person hearing in Lausanne on August 8 attended by Palace chairman Steve Parish.

A full award with detailed reasoning will be published unless the parties request confidentiality.

The verdict ends Palace’s Europa League ambitions for the season, with Forest stepping into the group stage and Palace set to begin their European campaign in the Conference League later this month.
