Callum Wilson Bids Farewell to Newcastle After Contract Expiry

Callum Wilson has confirmed his departure from Newcastle United following the expiration of his contract, bringing an end to a five-year stint at St James’ Park.

The 33-year-old striker, whose deal with the Magpies ended last week, leaves after failing to reach an agreement on a contract extension. Wilson scored 49 goals in 130 appearances during his time on Tyneside, becoming a key figure in the club’s recent rise.

“To all you Magpies, it’s time to say goodbye after an unbelievable few years at the Toon,” Wilson said in a farewell message. “Thank you for everything. We stood strong together through the highs and some lows to help the club experience new heights.”

Newcastle United paid tribute to the former England international, thanking him for playing a “huge part in our success in recent years.”

Wilson joined Newcastle from Bournemouth in 2020 for a reported £20 million fee. While he made an impact early on, his time at the club was marred by recurring injuries, particularly to his back and hamstrings. He made just 18 Premier League appearances last season.

Despite his fitness struggles, Wilson relished the opportunity to wear the club’s iconic number 9 shirt, a symbol of great strikers in Newcastle’s history.

“I am so proud to have worn the iconic number 9 shirt and to have added a little more history to it,” he added. “Scoring at the Gallowgate end really is as special as they say. All good things come to an end, but there’s no doubt Newcastle United will always have a place in mine and my family’s hearts.”

Reports suggest several Premier League clubs have expressed interest in Wilson, with Major League Soccer also a possible destination as he considers the next chapter of his career.
