The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially unveiled a striking new trophy for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), signaling a fresh era for women’s football on the continent.
The new trophy was revealed on Wednesday evening in Casablanca, Morocco — just days before the tournament kicks off on Saturday, July 5.
Designed with a bold and elegant silver-and-gold finish, the trophy mirrors the grandeur of the iconic men’s AFCON trophy, embodying a powerful message of equality, ambition, and progress in African women’s football.
According to CAF, the trophy’s design features a floral motif with twelve petals—each symbolising one of the participating nations—converging to form a blooming flower.
At its heart sits a golden football-shaped sphere, embossed with a map of Africa in gold, representing the pride and rising global ambition of the women’s game across the continent.
The base of the trophy is made of polished white marble, inscribed with the WAFCON title and encircled with a gold-engraved CAF logo, reinforcing the confederation’s commitment to elevating the status of the women’s competition among all 54 member nations.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe described the unveiling as a key step in his broader vision of positioning African women’s football among the best in the world.
That vision also includes a significant financial boost, with the prize money for this edition more than doubling to $2.4 million.
The 2024 WAFCON will be held across multiple cities in Morocco from July 5 to 26.
Hosts Morocco will open the tournament against Zambia in Rabat, while heavyweights like nine-time champions Nigeria and current titleholders South Africa gear up for a thrilling contest for continental dominance.
The unveiling of the new trophy sets the tone for what promises to be a landmark edition of WAFCON—one that celebrates not just excellence on the pitch but also the growing stature of African women’s football on the global stage.
