CAF Names 73 Match Officials for AFCON 2025, No Nigerian Referee Included

The Confederation of African Football has unveiled the full roster of match officials selected for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025, scheduled to run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

CAF confirmed that 73 officials will take charge of the tournament’s matches, comprising 28 referees, 31 assistant referees, and 14 VAR officials.

Notably, no Nigerian referee made the list, continuing a trend that has raised concerns in recent years about Nigeria’s absence in top-level CAF officiating assignments.

The selected officials represent all corners of the continent and include some of Africa’s most seasoned referees — individuals with extensive experience across CAF’s elite club and national team competitions.

All appointed referees are expected to arrive in Morocco on December 15 for a rigorous preparation camp. The programme will be coordinated by CAF’s Referees Department and will feature physical, technical and theoretical evaluations to ensure peak performance during the tournament.

CAF says the meticulous selection reflects its commitment to enhancing refereeing standards, maintaining competition integrity and improving the overall technical quality of African football.

AFCON 2025, hosted in Morocco, is expected to be one of the most competitive editions yet — and CAF insists that top-tier officiating is central to delivering a successful tournament.
