Bryan Mbeumo Joins Manchester United in £71m Transfer from Brentford

Manchester United have completed the signing of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford in a deal worth up to £71 million.

The transfer ends weeks of negotiations between the two clubs, with United agreeing to pay an initial £65 million across four instalments, along with an additional £6 million in performance-related add-ons.

The 24-year-old forward has signed a five-year contract with the option of a further year and joins in time for United’s pre-season tour of the United States.

Mbeumo expressed his excitement at joining the Premier League giants, describing the move as a dream come true.

“As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up,” he said. “My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.”

The Cameroonian forward added that the project at Old Trafford played a key role in his decision: “Everybody told me about the environment that is being created here and how exciting the plans are for the future. This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans. We are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies.”

United had previously submitted a £55 million bid with £7.5 million in add-ons, which Brentford rejected.

Tottenham were also interested in Mbeumo, but the player was said to prefer a move to Old Trafford. Despite having two years left on his contract at Brentford, Mbeumo made it clear he wanted to join United.

The add-ons included in the final deal are understood to be easily achievable, based on appearances and goals, increasing the likelihood that Brentford will receive close to the full £71 million fee.

This would represent a major profit for the West London club, who signed Mbeumo for just £4 million from Troyes in 2019. He scored 70 goals and assisted over 50 more during his time with the Bees.

Mbeumo arrives at United following a standout season in which he scored 20 Premier League goals—only three players scored more—and registered seven assists.

His expected assists total of 9.26 led the league, and he delivered a Premier League-best 202 crosses. He also ranked among the top players in distance covered and sprints attempted, highlighting his relentless work rate and pace, which peaked at 36.63 km/h—the fourth-fastest in the league.

According to the Sky Sports Power Rankings, only Mohamed Salah ranked higher in form points last season. Mbeumo’s 27 goal contributions earned Brentford 22 points, accounting for 40% of their total haul.

Manchester United continue to explore other forward options, having monitored strikers including Ollie Watkins, Viktor Gyokeres, and Nicolas Jackson. RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko remains a player of interest, with United having tracked the Slovenian striker since his time at RB Salzburg.

Meanwhile, the club is also expected to focus on player exits. Barcelona have agreed to take Marcus Rashford on loan, while Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Tyrell Malacia have been granted extended time off to assess potential transfers.
