BREAKING NEWS: Zimbabwe score late goal to leave Eagles World Cup dream hanging

Morocco 2025

The Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to defeat the warriors of Zimbabwe in an important must win game at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, in Uyo earlier today to dent their hopes of qualifying for the world cup.

Despite controlling the ball for the first forty-five minutes, Nigeria struggled to generate opportunities as the warriors put up a strong defense.

The game appeared to be heading for a draw until Genk forward Tolu Arokodare came into the game, substituting AC Milan forward, Samuel Chukwueze. His physical presence upfront alongside Victor Osimhen, allowed Nigeria to overcome the opponent’s stubborn defense. Arokodare’s outstanding hold-up play enabled Ola Aina to put Osimhen in front of Nigeria with the ideal cross.

However, one minute into additional time, Tawanda Chirewa dribbled into the box and beyond William Troost-Ekong, before finishing past Stanley Nwabali to equalize for the warriors of Zimbabwe

Despite opportunities on both ends, neither team was able to add to the score, leaving Nigeria to lament the lost opportunity as Zimbabwe shocked them with a goal.

As it stands on matchday 5 in Group C of the CAF 2026 World Cup Qualifiers, South Africa remain top of the table with 13 points, Rwanda occupy second with 8 points, Benin republic also sit in third with 8 points just behind Rwanda on goal difference, Nigeria are 4th with 7 points, Lesotho sit fifth, followed by the warriors of Zimbabwe in 6th with four points.

The CAF 2026 World Cup Qualifiers would resume by September, 2025.
