Bayer Leverkusen have completed the signing of Jarell Quansah from Liverpool in a deal worth £35 million, with the 22-year-old penning a five-year contract with the German Bundesliga champions.
Quansah’s move marks the third transfer between the two clubs this summer, following Liverpool’s acquisitions of Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen.
The England U21 international was part of the squad that recently lifted the European Under-21 Championship, defeating Germany in the final.
His rapid development and commanding presence at the back caught the eye of several clubs, with Newcastle United having expressed interest last summer as part of a proposed swap deal involving winger Anthony Gordon—a move Liverpool ultimately rejected.
Quansah, a product of Liverpool’s academy, made 58 appearances for the Reds, scoring three goals.
He was part of the squad that won the League Cup in 2024 and made 13 Premier League appearances last season as Liverpool claimed the league title under manager Arne Slot.
Because he is a homegrown player, the entire £35m fee will count as pure profit for Liverpool in relation to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes expressed delight at the signing, praising Quansah’s qualities.
“He has already made an impressive impact in a Liverpool defence dominated by world-class players,” Rolfes said.
“With Jarell, our defence gains significant dynamism, pace, and toughness in tackling. He’s another very important building block for the future.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool are already exploring defensive reinforcements, with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi on their radar amid uncertainty over the futures of Ibrahima Konaté and Joe Gomez.
Konaté has just 12 months remaining on his current contract and has yet to agree to an extension, raising speculation over a possible summer exit. Gomez’s status at Anfield is also reportedly under review.
The departure of Quansah, combined with contract uncertainties, suggests Liverpool may be preparing for a broader shake-up in their defensive line ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
