Arsenal have officially announced the signing of Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in a deal reported to be worth around £55 million ($75 million).
The 26-year-old Euro 2024 winner has signed a five-year contract with the North London club, bringing an end to his long association with Sociedad, where he made 236 appearances after rising through their youth ranks.
Zubimendi had previously attracted interest from Liverpool and was also linked with Real Madrid before opting to join Mikel Arteta’s side.
“This is a huge moment in my career,” Zubimendi said after completing the move. “It’s the transfer I was looking for and one I really wanted.
As soon as you step in here, you realise how massive this club is. Arsenal’s style of play suits me perfectly.
They’ve shown their potential in recent seasons, and I believe the best is yet to come.”
According to The Athletic, Arsenal paid more than Zubimendi’s €60 million (£51m, $71m) release clause to allow the transfer fee to be paid in instalments.
Zubimendi’s arrival bolsters Arsenal’s midfield following the departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho.
His presence is also expected to free up England international Declan Rice to take on a more advanced role in midfield, alongside captain Martin Ødegaard.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his delight at the acquisition, stating: “Martin is a player who brings immense quality and football intelligence.
He’s a great fit for our system and has all the attributes to become a key figure for us.”
