Abeokuta Enters Final Stretch as West African Para Games Preparations Near Completion

Abeokuta has entered its final week of preparations for the maiden West African Para Games for Zones A and B, with the National Sports Commission confirming that all operational plans are firmly on track ahead of the competition scheduled for November 26 to December 4.

The landmark event will unite para athletes from across West Africa in Ogun State, marking what officials describe as a major milestone in Nigeria’s expanding leadership in para sports development.

According to the NSC, the Games align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative, which aims to position Nigeria as a premier destination for international sporting events and accelerate the growth of the country’s sports economy. The programme is designed to upgrade infrastructure, boost participation and strengthen global engagement in para sports.

Officials disclosed that all key operational areas — including accommodation, transportation, venue readiness, medical services, accreditation, media operations, security, volunteer mobilisation and classification systems — have reached advanced stages.

The Local Organising Committee added that Abeokuta is primed to host an event that will showcase elite para sporting talent while highlighting the hospitality and cultural richness of Ogun State.

President of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria, Sunday Odebode, commended the NSC for its coordination, noting that the level of work completed so far reflects a shared commitment to delivering a world-class event.

“These Games represent a new dawn for para sports in West Africa,” Odebode said.

He expressed confidence that Nigeria will set a high benchmark for future editions, emphasising that both organisers and athletes are fully prepared for what promises to be a memorable opening day.

Odebode added that the event will deepen regional cooperation and expand competitive opportunities for para athletes across the continent.
