The highly anticipated Amazons Tennis Tournament 2026 is set to take center stage on March 28, 2026, at the iconic Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, TBS Onikan, Lagos. Registration begins at 9:00 AM, and participation is free for registered players.
Founded from a deep passion for tennis and a commitment to advancing women’s participation in sports, the Amazons Tournament continues to grow as one of the most inspiring women-focused recreational tennis competitions in Nigeria.
Speaking ahead of the 2026 edition, the convener described the tournament as a project birthed from “a place of passion and love for the racket sport that has given so much physically, mentally, and health-wise.”
The initiative was created to bridge a visible gap in representation. While tennis clubs and competitions often feature more male participants, the Amazons Tournament was specifically designed to build competitiveness among women and provide them with an annual platform to showcase their talent.
The tournament’s alignment with International Women’s Day further reinforces its mission. It not only celebrates the strength, resilience, and power of women globally, but also advocates for healthier lifestyles through regular exercise while amplifying conversations around women’s health challenges.
Beyond competition, the goal is to foster a strong and connected women’s tennis community.\
The Amazons Tournament has experienced remarkable growth since inception. The first edition featured 96 participants. In 2026, a record-breaking 124 women have registered, with additional players placed on a waiting list due to capacity constraints.
However, with growth comes increased financial commitment. While many brands have expressed interest in associating with the initiative, much of the current support has come in product partnerships rather than direct financial sponsorship. Organizers note that to elevate the tournament into a fully open competition accommodating more participants, greater financial backing is essential.
The long-term vision extends beyond national recognition. Plans are underway to transform the Amazons into an international recreational competition, welcoming participants from across the globe and potentially introducing a ranking system to increase competitiveness.
In addition, organizers are exploring the creation of a standalone platform for young Nigerian female ranked players — the proposed Amazons Junior Championship — aimed at nurturing the next generation of elite female tennis athletes.
Looking ahead, the organizers remain committed to building on the tournament’s growing success story.
Key continuity plans include:
1. Strengthening advocacy efforts to encourage more women — young and old — to embrace tennis.
2. Securing corporate partnerships for sustainable funding.
3. Expanding the annual calendar to potentially host two major women-focused tournaments each year.
