Nigeria strengthened their dominance at the ongoing West Africa Trophy in Abuja on Sunday, cruising to a commanding nine-wicket victory over Sierra Leone at the NCF Oval to record their fourth consecutive win of the tournament.
After winning the toss, the Yellow Greens opted to field and immediately put Sierra Leone under pressure. The visitors struggled to gain any rhythm, losing wickets consistently and failing to build meaningful partnerships throughout their innings.
Sierra Leone could only muster 95 all out in 18.5 overs, with John Bangura standing out as the lone bright spot. He top-scored with 37 off 35 balls, while the rest of the batting order faltered, with most players failing to reach double figures.
Nigeria’s bowlers—Prosper Useni, Isaac Okpe, Isiyaku Okasha, Joshua Asia, Vincent Adewoye, and Sylvester Okpe—kept run-scoring opportunities scarce with disciplined spells.
Nigeria’s chase began with an early setback as opener Selim Salau fell to Chernor Bah, the only Sierra Leonean bowler to take a wicket. But that dismissal did little to slow the hosts.
Debutant Rahmon Ali took charge immediately, producing a brilliant match-winning innings of 64 not out off 36 balls, laced with seven fours and two sixes.
He found solid support in captain Sulaimon Runsewe, who played a steady anchor role with an unbeaten 21 off 30 balls, rotating the strike and letting Ali dominate.
Their unbroken stand carried Nigeria to 98/1 in just 11.2 overs, sealing a comfortable win with nearly nine overs remaining.
Ali’s remarkable debut earned him the Player of the Match award and marked him as a promising new force in Nigeria’s batting lineup.
With four straight victories, the Yellow Greens now look well-placed to secure an early berth in the final as the round-robin stage approaches its conclusion.
