Preparations Intensify for Abuja 2027 African School Games

Preparations for the second edition of the African School Games in Abuja have intensified as the Local Organising Committee met with top officials of the National Sports Commission to accelerate planning ahead of the 2027 event.

The meeting focused on major milestones, infrastructure readiness and the collaborative steps required as Nigeria positions itself to host one of the continent’s biggest youth sporting gatherings.

LOC Chairman Lanre Abari met with NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade, who reiterated the Commission’s full support for delivering a world-class Games.

Olopade described the African School Games as a crucial platform for the growth of youth sports on the continent, insisting that Nigeria is prepared to take a leadership role.

“The African School Games represent the future of youth sports development in Africa, and Nigeria is ready to lead from the front,” he said, assuring that the NSC would provide all necessary support to ensure the 2027 edition sets new standards for excellence and participation.

Abari, speaking after the meeting, expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to deliver a memorable and impactful Games.

“Abuja 2027 will be a moment of pride for Nigeria — a stage where we show our hospitality, unity and the immense potential of our young athletes,” he said. “With the inauguration behind us, we will hit the ground running and deliver Games that every Nigerian and every African child can be proud of.”

A seasoned executive with experience across the private and public sectors, Abari is widely respected for his strategic leadership and operational efficiency. As former Chairman of the Oyo State Gaming Board, he earned a reputation for people-driven leadership and delivering results.
