Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has criticised Mohamed Salah for his recent comments about Liverpool, warning that the Egyptian star is putting his Anfield legacy at risk.
Salah sparked controversy on Saturday when he claimed Liverpool had “thrown him under the bus” and suggested his relationship with manager Arne Slot had broken down. His remarks have shaken the club ahead of a crucial Champions League clash.
Speaking on his podcast — as reported by BBC Sport — Rooney said Slot must now assert his authority by leaving Salah out of the squad for Tuesday’s game against Inter Milan and the weekend Premier League fixture against Brighton.
“Arne Slot has to show his authority and pull him in and say, ‘You are not travelling with the team. What you said is not acceptable,’” Rooney said.
“Take yourself off to AFCON and let everything calm down. If I was him, there is no way he would be in the team.”
Rooney added that Salah now faces two options: resolve his differences with Slot or leave the club entirely.
“It needs to be sorted out quickly either way.”
The former England captain also questioned why Salah — a Liverpool icon since joining from Roma in 2017 — would take his frustrations public.
“He is absolutely destroying his legacy at Liverpool. It would be sad for him to throw it all away. He’s gone about it all wrong.”
Salah had earlier expressed frustration over limited game time and hinted that someone inside the club wanted to make him the scapegoat for recent poor results.
