Nigeria to Host Inaugural African Boxing Congress and Gala Night in December 2025

Nigeria will host the maiden African Boxing Congress and Boxing Gala Night on Sunday, December 28, 2025, bringing delegates from more than 20 national federations across the continent to Lagos.

The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), led by Hon. Wale Edun, secured the hosting rights from African Boxing—the governing body for the continent’s boxing confederation and an arm of World Boxing, the global body for Olympic-style boxing.

In its confirmation letter, African Boxing hailed Nigeria as “a strategic nation with the capacity to lead a holistic advancement of the squared ropes sport in the continent.” The letter also announced the appointment of NBF Vice President Hon. Omonlei Imadu to the African Boxing Working Committee, with added responsibility as Head of Organisation for the event.

Reacting to the development, Imadu expressed delight at the opportunity and the significance of the congress for Nigeria.

“As a federation, we would do all in our power to host a successful event in December. As the head of the organisation, I am particularly excited at the prospect of having the congress in Nigeria because it’s one that will position both the NBF and our nation as a central point for the highest boxing decision-making body on the continent,” he said.

Securing the hosting rights puts Nigeria in a strong position to potentially host the African qualifiers for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. It also opens doors for developmental programmes aimed at advancing Olympic-style boxing in the country.

In another major milestone, African Boxing has confirmed that it will establish its continental headquarters in Lagos—further cementing Nigeria’s growing influence in African boxing.
