With just six days left before the maiden West African Para Games (Zones A & B) kick off, Abeokuta is buzzing with intensified activity as the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) enter the final stretch of preparations.
Scheduled for November 26 to December 4, 2025, the Games are positioned to become one of the most impactful para sporting events in West Africa’s history.
The NSC’s inauguration of a 13-man LOC earlier this month accelerated coordination across key operational fronts, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to delivering world-class sports events.
The initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative for Nigeria’s Sports Economy (RHINSE), which identifies sports as a driver of international recognition and national development. For the NSC, the Games are not merely a competition, they represent Nigeria’s renewed determination to lead the sub-region in inclusive sports advancement.
Accommodation centres are conducting final checks to ensure comfort and accessibility for visiting delegations, while transport officials have fine-tuned movement plans for athletes and team staff.
Medical and classification units have completed their final system evaluations, and both the media and accreditation departments are wrapping up protocols to guarantee smooth coverage and secure access control.
The atmosphere around Abeokuta reflects a mix of readiness, excitement, and pride as the city prepares to host athletes and officials from across West Africa.
Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC, reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to raising the standard of events hosted in the country, expressing confidence that the upcoming Games will reinforce Nigeria’s reputation for organisational excellence.
“We’ve recorded significant achievements hosting international events this year including the CAA U-18/U-20 Athletics Championship in Abeokuta, the National Sports Festival, and other global competitions — and this event will be no exception,” Hon. Olopade said.
As participating nations finalise travel plans, anticipation continues to grow across the sub-region. Beyond showcasing elite para athletes, the Games aim to promote unity, accessibility, and inclusion.
With six days to go, Abeokuta stands ready to deliver a landmark sporting spectacle for West Africa.
