Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has criticised Fulham star Alex Iwobi for posting a controversial video of the Super Eagles’ hotel in Morocco ahead of Nigeria’s 4-1 victory over Gabon.
Iwobi had shared a silent clip showing the state of the team’s accommodation at Rive Hotel, Rabat, where the squad stayed before their World Cup playoff matches against Gabon and DR Congo.
The video immediately stirred reactions online, with many Nigerians questioning the Nigeria Football Federation’s level of preparation.
Although Iwobi later clarified that he did not intend to criticise the hotel or the football authorities, Mikel insisted the midfielder exercised poor judgement by posting such content so close to crucial fixtures.
Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, the former Super Eagles captain said:
“Again, Alex Iwobi — that picture, maybe it was taken innocently and him posting it. But as a player playing in Europe, living in nice accommodation, you should have known better, especially two days before the game.
“Don’t put that up. I read the comments — you don’t want that negativity around two days before the playoff games.
“If I was the captain, I would tell him to take that down straight away. Take it off your Instagram. We don’t need that.”
Nigeria went on to beat Gabon 4-1 after extra time in the semi-final playoffs, while DR Congo edged Cameroon in the other fixture. However, the Super Eagles later lost to DR Congo in the final playoff match on Sunday night, missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
