Swiatek Cruises Past Arango to Reach US Open Second Round

World number two Iga Swiatek stormed into the second round of the US Open on Tuesday, brushing aside Colombia’s Emiliana Arango with a dominant straight-sets victory.

Fresh from winning her maiden Wimbledon title and the Cincinnati Open, the 24-year-old Polish star underlined her status as the tournament favourite with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 win on Arthur Ashe Stadium at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Swiatek broke Arango in the fourth game of the opener and never looked back, sealing the first set with ease. She carried that momentum into the second set, breaking in the opening game and again in the seventh to tighten her grip.

Serving for the match at 5-2, she sealed victory on her second match point with a sharp volley.

Swiatek will now face either American teenager Valerie Glozman or the Netherlands’ Suzan Lamens in the next round.
