Harry Maguire says he has no intention of leaving Manchester United this summer, insisting it would be “silly” to walk away at a time when the club is undergoing positive changes under manager Ruben Amorim.
The 32-year-old defender joined United from Leicester City in 2019 for £80m, signing a six-year deal with an option for an extra season.
United triggered that clause earlier this year, ensuring he remains at Old Trafford for the current campaign.
Speaking on Thursday, Maguire revealed that Amorim has shut down any transfer discussions amid interest from other clubs.
“Last year, the clause was in their hands, so there was no option for me, they activated it and it got extended,” he explained.
“This year, obviously, I’m up at the end of the year. I’m pretty sure the club made it clear this summer that I can’t leave on any terms, with other clubs enquiring about my situation.”
Looking ahead, the England international expects talks on his long-term future to begin in the coming months. “I’m sure over the next few months we’ll sit down and have a conversation about where we want to go and if they want to extend.
Obviously, I have something in mind about what I want to do, but it’s an amazing club to play for and you’d be silly if you wanted to jump out of it as soon as you could,” he said.
Despite United finishing a disappointing 15th in the Premier League last season, Maguire believes the club is now moving in the right direction under Amorim and new director of football Jason Wilcox.
“We’re in a good place, positive as a club, and I feel like the hierarchy has come in and taken it in the right direction. Since I arrived six years ago, it’s a completely different place in terms of structure behind the management staff,” he noted.
United suffered a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal in their league opener last Sunday, but Maguire drew encouragement from the performances of new signings Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko.
“This club demands players who create chances and score goals, and that’s what it’s always done. I think Bryan and Matheus coming in, with Sesko off the bench, are players who will prove they can do that,” he added.
