Real Madrid down Osasuna in Xabi Alonso La Liga Managerial debut

Kylian Mbappe scored from the penalty spot to hand Real Madrid a 1–0 win over Osasuna in their La Liga opener on Tuesday, marking a victorious debut for new coach Xabi Alonso.

The French striker, last season’s European Golden Shoe winner, converted six minutes into the second half after being brought down in the box by defender Juan Cruz.

The goal ensured Madrid maintained their remarkable run of being unbeaten in opening league fixtures since 2008, as they began life after Carlo Ancelotti with three points at the Santiago Bernabeu.

New signing Trent Alexander-Arnold made his La Liga debut following his summer move from Liverpool, while new centre back, Dean Huijsen also featured in the starting line-up.

Madrid were without star midfielder Jude Bellingham, who is sidelined until October after shoulder surgery.

Osasuna frustrated the hosts for large parts of the game, with goalkeeper Sergio Herrera denying efforts from Huijsen and Eder Militao before Mbappe’s strike settled the contest.

Alonso handed a debut to 18-year-old winger Franco Mastantuono, as Madrid comfortably managed the closing stages of the match.

Osasuna’s hopes of a comeback ended when Abel Bretones was shown a red card in stoppage time.

The victory gives Madrid a solid start to the season under Alonso, while Mbappe made headlines by scoring his first competitive goal for the club wearing the famous No.10 shirt.
