Newcastle United are on the verge of completing the signing of Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey in a deal worth around £40m.
BBC Sport reports that the two clubs have reached an agreement in principle, with only minor details remaining before the transfer is finalised. Once completed, Ramsey will undergo a medical and other formalities ahead of his move to St James’ Park.
The 24-year-old, a former England Under-21 international, has scored 17 goals in 167 appearances for Villa since making his senior debut in 2019 and was a key figure under manager Unai Emery last season.
Villa and Newcastle face each other in the opening match of the Premier League season at 12:30 BST on Saturday.
Ramsey will become Newcastle’s third major signing of the summer, following the arrivals of winger Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and defender Malick Thiaw from AC Milan on permanent deals.
Earlier this month, England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale also joined the Magpies on a season-long loan from Southampton.
