Luis Diaz has officially joined Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in a £65.5 million deal, ending his successful three-and-a-half-year spell at Liverpool.
The Colombian winger has signed a four-year contract with the German giants after Liverpool accepted Bayern’s improved bid over the weekend. An initial offer of £58.6m had been rejected earlier this month.
Diaz, 28, was left out of Liverpool’s pre-season clash against AC Milan on Saturday amid growing speculation over his future. He departs Anfield as a Premier League champion and with four major trophies to his name.
“I arrived with all the dreams in the world, and I am leaving proud of everything we achieved together,” Diaz wrote in a heartfelt farewell message on Instagram. “Liverpool is, indeed, a special team, and I will keep everyone in my heart.”
The winger expressed sadness that his departure was marred by the recent tragic death of teammate Diogo Jota, saying, “It would have been the perfect goodbye if we hadn’t lost one of ours in such a tragic way. I carry everyone with me in my heart, but one of them in particular: Diogo. I will never forget him.”
Diaz joined Liverpool from FC Porto in January 2022 for an initial fee of £37 million, going on to score 41 goals in 148 appearances for the Reds.
In his debut season, he helped the team win both the FA Cup and EFL Cup, and featured in the side that lost the 2022 UEFA Champions League final to Real Madrid.
Last season, Diaz enjoyed the best campaign of his career, netting 17 goals across all competitions as Liverpool reclaimed the Premier League title.
His departure brings Liverpool’s total income from player sales this summer to around £115 million, which has helped fund over £270 million in new signings, including Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez.
The club remains active in the transfer market, with Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak among the top targets.
The Sweden international is reportedly open to a move and did not travel with Newcastle for their pre-season tour in Asia.
