D’Tigers Announce 17-Man Provisional Squad for 2025 FIBA AfroBasket in Angola

The Nigeria Basketball Federation has unveiled a 17-man provisional roster for the senior men’s national basketball team, D’Tigers, ahead of the 2025 FIBA AfroBasket tournament, which will take place in Angola from August 12 to 24.

Topping the list is Josh Okogie, the Houston Rockets’ recent signing, who returns to the national team after a few years away. The former Phoenix Suns guard last featured for Nigeria at the 2019 FIBA Men’s World Cup in China and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Also named in the squad is Caleb Agada, fresh off a championship-winning campaign with Al Ahli Tripoli in the 2025 Basketball Africa League (BAL). His inclusion adds strength to a group that blends experience with fresh talent.

Veteran players Ike Nwamu, Mike Nuga, and Talib Zanna are also part of the team, while Peter Olisemeka and Devine Eke, who featured in this year’s BAL tournament for Rivers Hoopers (Nigeria) and ASCVD (Senegal) respectively, have been rewarded with call-ups.

The rest of the provisional squad includes Kareem Joseph, Wesley Iwundu, Ugochukwu Simon, Stanley Okoye, Folabomi Fayemi, Emmanuel Omogbo, Christian Mekowulu, Martins Igbanu, Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu, and Jekiri Tonye.

A notable absentee from the roster is Chimezie Metu, a key figure in recent campaigns, who is currently recovering from a long-term injury.

This marks D’Tigers’ first major assembly since August 2023, when they competed in the FIBA Pre-Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Lagos but failed to secure a place at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The team is expected to begin camp next week as preparations intensify. The roster will be trimmed to the final 12 players who will represent Nigeria in Angola.

Drawn into Group B, Nigeria will begin their campaign against Madagascar on August 13, face defending champions Tunisia on August 15, and conclude the group stage against Cameroon on August 17.

The knockout stage starts on August 18, with the final set for August 24 at the Pavilhao Multiusos de Luanda.
