In a heartwarming show of sportsmanship, players of the Super Falcons visited South African midfielder Gabriela Salgado in Casablanca on Tuesday, following her injury during their semi-final clash at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Salgado sustained a serious injury, a fractured left leg after an accidental collision in Banyana Banyana’s 2-1 loss to Nigeria at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium.
She was immediately taken to the Mohammed VI University Hospital, where she successfully underwent surgery on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old is expected to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines, with her recovery estimated to take about a year.
Despite the fierce rivalry on the pitch, the Super Falcons’ visit underscores the sportsmanlike and mutual respect that exists among top athletes.
Meanwhile, Banyana Banyana will take on Ghana in the third-place match of the tournament on Friday.
