Over 1,000 Athletes Arrive Abuja for 2025 African Karate Championship

At least 1,000 athletes from 31 African countries have arrived in Abuja for the 2025 African Karate Championship, which officially kicks off on Monday, July 21, and runs through July 28.

The President of the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN), Silas Agara, confirmed during a press briefing on Sunday that participants will compete across four categories: cadet (ages 14–15), junior (16–17), senior, and para karate for athletes above 18 years.

“Today, we are happy to announce that most of the countries that indicated interest in participating in the upcoming African Championship are already on ground,” Agara said.

He added that technical officials from other nations are also in Abuja to assist with the smooth conduct of the tournament.

According to Agara, organizing logistics for the influx of participants has been a major focus for the federation over the past week.

“We’ve been on ground, ensuring accommodation, local transport, and immigration processes like visas on arrival are sorted. It hasn’t been easy, but we’re on course,” he assured.

Agara also revealed that the General Assembly of the African Karate Federation will hold in Abuja during the championship, adding further significance to Nigeria’s hosting role.

Meanwhile, the Technical Director of the Federation, Dave Jegede, expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances at the tournament, confirming that 60 Nigerian athletes will be competing.

“Our athletes are in high spirits. We’ve prepared well, knowing the weight of hosting such a championship,” Jegede said.

He added that Nigeria’s preparations included four national and two regional championships, with consistent training camps to keep the athletes sharp.

“Our team includes reigning African champions, medalists from previous editions, and even Commonwealth medalists. We are confident that Nigeria will make a strong statement at this year’s championship,” Jegede concluded.

The championship is expected to draw significant attention across the continent, as Nigeria plays host to what promises to be a thrilling week of martial arts competition and continental camaraderie.
