Algeria Hold Nigeria to Goalless Draw to Seal First-Ever WAFCON Quarter-Final Spot

Algeria booked their place in the quarter-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) for the first time in their history after holding nine-time champions Nigeria to a goalless draw in Casablanca.

In a tense encounter at the Stade Larbi Zaouli, the Super Falcons dominated possession and created more chances, but Algeria’s resolute defending and the brilliance of goalkeeper Chloé N’Gazi proved decisive in securing a crucial point.

The result, combined with Botswana’s 2-1 win over Tunisia in the group’s other fixture, ensured Algeria finished second in Group B with five points, just behind group leaders Nigeria, who wrapped up the stage with seven points.

Already assured of qualification, Nigeria rotated their starting line-up but remained dangerous throughout.

Francisca Ordega, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Esther Okoronkwo all came close to breaking the deadlock, yet Algeria’s backline held firm.

N’Gazi stood out, especially in the dying moments, making a stunning save from Okoronkwo’s header deep into stoppage time to preserve a vital clean sheet.

Despite Nigeria’s control and a tally of four goals with none conceded before this fixture, the Super Falcons were unable to find a way through.

Head coach Justin Madugu reflected on the stalemate with perspective: “Every match gives us something new. We rotated the squad, maintained a clean sheet, and learned to grind out results when the goals don’t come.”

Algeria coach Farid Benstiti was full of praise for his side’s discipline and heart: “We knew it would take a perfect defensive game to hold Nigeria. I’m proud of the girls – they showed heart and tactical maturity.”

Nigeria will now face the runners-up from Group A in the quarter-finals, while Algeria prepare for a historic knockout stage appearance — a milestone achievement for a side that entered the tournament as underdogs.

Their journey continues, and while sterner tests lie ahead, Algeria have already shown they are capable of standing tall among Africa’s elite.
