Lagos, Nigeria – June 22, 2025 —
The Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Lagos Island was the center of action on Sunday as the William Troost-Ekong Foundation hosted the 2025 edition of its annual charity football match, drawing a dazzling lineup of football stars, entertainers, and public figures in support of underprivileged children.
Organised by Super Eagles vice-captain and stand-in captain,William Troost-Ekong, the event, themed “Play For Purpose,” brought together some of Africa’s finest footballers and celebrities for a day of sport, community impact, and celebration. The initiative aims to raise funds and awareness for children’s education and football development.
Supported by major sponsors including NoOnes, BFA Sports, Puma, and Power Horse, the event drew a large crowd of fans, philanthropists, and sports enthusiasts.
Notable in attendance was the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, who also captained the invited team of past and present football greats. Among the players who graced the pitch were Obafemi Martins, Victor Osimhen, Odion Ighalo, Victor Boniface, Ahmed Musa, John Ogu, Tolu Arokodare, Wilfred Ndidi, Joseph Yobo, Stanley Nwabali, Frank Onyeka, Sikiru Alimi, and Cameroonian legend Alex Song.
Entertainment celebrities also featured prominently, including rapper Odumodublvck, comedian Ayo Makun (AY), and actor Samuel Perry (Broda Shaggi), adding humour and flair to the proceedings.
The match ended in a high-scoring 7–5 thriller, with goals from Sikiru Alimi (brace), Ahmed Musa, Victor Boniface, Obafemi Martins, AY, and Odumodublvck, while Ndidi, Brown Ideye, and Kelechi Iheanacho also found the net. A penalty shootout followed, with successful spot-kicks from Boniface, Zlatan, Yemo Lee, UK, AY, and Arokodare, while Song, Ideye, and Dikko missed their attempts.
AY was awarded Man of the Match for his performance, and Troost-Ekong proudly lifted the Charity Cup at full time, as the crowd erupted in applause.
Speaking after the game, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was also in attendance, commended the foundation’s efforts and pledged continued support from the state government.
“I’m here to support our Super Eagles captain. This is a noble cause, and my government will always encourage such initiatives,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said.
In his remarks, William Troost-Ekong expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and reiterated the foundation’s commitment to changing lives through sport.
“Football has changed our lives, and it can change theirs too,” he said. “We support these children in two main ways — through education and football development. Our goal is to inspire and empower them to succeed.”
The Troost-Ekong Foundation continues to build momentum as one of Nigeria’s most impactful athlete-led initiatives, proving that sport remains a powerful tool for social change.
