After Atletico Madrid striker Julián Álvarez’s contentious disallowed penalty kick against Real Madrid during the UEFA Champions League shootout in March, the rules governing penalty kicks have been changed.
The earlier decision that declared the goal ineligible because of a “double touch” has since been changed.
In contrast to the previous rule, which regarded such attempts as misses, going ahead, if a penalty taker inadvertently hits the ball with both feet and scores, the penalty will be retaken rather than deemed void.
Atletico Madrid protested the judgment with UEFA as it contributed to their elimination from the competition.
