World No 1 Sinner meets Pope Leo XIV

World number one, Jannik Sinner, was received at the Vatican by new Pope, Pope Leo XIV, who also happens to be a tennis fan on Wednesday (today).

Jannik Sinner who is currently competing at the Italian Open in Rome, visited the new Pope the Vatican said Wednesday.

According to the Vatican “Pope Leo XIV receives professional tennis player Jannik Sinner in the Vatican and asks for some sporting tips”.

“The audience took place in the rooms attached to the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall, and the Pope also met with Mr. Sinner’s family and the President of the Italian Tennis Federation, Alberto Binaghi”.

“The 2025 Italian Open is currently underway in Rome and is part of both the ATP and WTA 1000 circuits”.

“The Pope’s passion for tennis is well known,” the head of the Vatican’s press office added.

Sinner was accompanied by members of his family and the president of the Italian Tennis Federation, Angelo Binaghi, during the visit, he said.

The 69-year-old Chicago-born pope just not only likes to watch but also to play tennis, according to reports.

In an interview after being made cardinal back in 2023, the former Peru missionary said, “I consider myself an amateur tennis player.

“Since I left Peru, I haven’t had many opportunities to play, but I can’t wait to get back on the court.”
